Josquin des Prez - Ave Maria (1485)
We were studying this beautiful choral work in our history of music class as an example of a renaissance motet. It became very popular in its time, appearing first in the earliest volume of polyphonic motets every published in 1502. I like this video with a graphic score. The piece stands on its own but it also opened the door for later composers like Bach who got super creative in how they used interweaving lines of melody.
